About the Department

Overview

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nottingham.

Nottingham, quite simply, is one of the leading universities for a degree education in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. All the degree courses provide students with a thorough grounding in both the academic and practical aspects of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Dependent upon your interests and talents you have the option to specialise in a particular branch of the subject in your third or fourth year of an undergraduate course.

The Department received a rating of excellent by the Higher Education Funding Council. A degree from Nottingham has a high reputation within the electrical and electronic engineering industry (and even in industry and finance generally). In recent years this has been reflected in over 97% of our graduates finding career employment or registering for further study at MSc or doctoral level within three months of graduation from an undergraduate course.

The Department has close links with a range of companies, many of whom support student projects and laboratories, some providing undergraduate sponsorship. A Professional Advisory Board offers advice on teaching and research, assisting us with curriculum development. Many visit the Department both to recruit graduates and to select students wishing to spend a year out in industry.

The University’s overseas campuses provide our students with a unique opportunity to study abroad. Nottingham is also part of Universitas 21 which allows undergraduates to study in one of several leading International universities.

We hope you will find the information you are looking for on our website or in our Electrical and Electronic undergraduate course brochure or postgraduate taught course information. We pride ourselves on being friendly and approachable so if you require any further information please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Teaching

Teaching within the Department is carried out by more than 30 academic staff using a wide range of facilities including well-equipped lecture rooms, extensive laboratories and IT facilities all supported by laboratory staff, specialist research staff, and research students. Teaching is a combination of practical, theoretical, project work and tutorials.

Each undergraduate student is assigned a personal tutor who provides general guidance and support. Students have regular tutorials and discussions with their tutors throughout their course. Following the successful completion of Year 2, students may spend a year undertaking approved training in industry and are then eligible for an Industrial Diploma in addition to their degree.

A BEng degree is normally taken over three years and provides the key skills needed to become an Engineer. The four year MEng courses provide an enhanced and extended learning experience that develops independent thinking, achievement and responsibility. Accredited MEng degrees provide exemption from further study on the route to CEng status, while accredited BEng degrees will require a further period of study in order to gain CEng status. In Nottingham our MEng students learn key professional and design skills and undertake a wide-ranging group project, an individual research/industrial project and several advanced modules specifically related to the Department’s research expertise.

Selection

Suitable applicants for undergraduate courses are invited to Department Open Days. However, where there are long distances to travel, and especially for candidates from overseas, an offer may be made without a visit.

The Department is normally happy to accept applications from students who wish to defer their entry. We consider, on an individual basis, applicants offering qualifications other than ’A’ Levels. The Foundation Year Programme is designed to provide an entry route to all our courses for those students whose qualifications do not immediately allow them admission to undergraduate Engineering programmes.

For details of the application procedures for postgraduate courses, please visit the postgraduate prospectus.
