Biography

Andy Phillips' doctoral work was with the Centre for Communication Networks Research at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), and he was awarded his PhD for a thesis entitled 'Optically Amplified Digital Pulse Position Modulation Systems' in 1995. For his postdoctoral work Dr Phillips remained at MMU, primarily working on the EU ACTS programme 'PLANET' (Photonic Local Access Network) project. His initial work on this project involved modelling of optical amplifier cascades but then moved towards developing protection strategies for the high splitting optically amplified passive optical network (SuperPON) central to the project. In October 2000 he joined Marconi where he focused on optical performance modelling and system design, this time for WDM metropolitan and regional networks. Dr Phillips commenced his current role at Nottingham, in January 2003. Subsequent to his appointment Dr Phillips has developed his interest in the evaluation of bit error rate performance of optical links and has also investigated aspects of optical performance monitoring (OPM) (including work supported by EPSRC in optical sampling using four wave mixing in SOAs (EPSRC First Grant Scheme) and the use of OPM in conjunction with optical regeneration (EPSRC CASE for New Academics). He was also involved in the EU STREP "FAST ACCESS" (Low-cost 1.3um sources for FAST ACCESS technologies) and more recently is active in "COPERNICUS" (Compact OTDM/WDM Optical Receivers based on Photonic Crystal Integrated Circuits), specifically regarding the system level modelling. Recent PhD completions include work on burst mode reception, OPM for ASE related issues and semiconductor optical amplifiers. He currently has 7 PhD students supporting his work in projects related to free space optical communications, optical regeneration, burst mode reception, OTDM, optical amplification and optical imaging.
