Biography

Mr Dawson started his career in civil engineering as a Technician with major civil engineering contractors. After university study he spent 5 years with civil engineering consultants on a wide variety of geotechnical work as a geotechnical, then senior geotechnical engineer. This included design of projects in the UK, Africa & Asia involving earth dams, mine pit slope stability assessments, highway schemes, water resource and hydraulic studies, advanced laboratory testing of soils, earthworks design, finite element analysis and many site investigation contracts. Since joining the University of Nottingham he has been retained as an expert consultant on several road materials projects. He's engaged in many research studies in pavement foundations, materials recycling and pavement design, performance and maintenance. He is responsible for undergraduate teaching in geomechanics, including courses on geo-environmental engineering and geology. He is exchange student tutor.

Past Research

+ Assessing the Environmental Impact of Secondary Materials in Road Construction A project in which the real risk of leaching from waste, by-product and other secondary aggregates and binders was assessed for road construction and related uses. This project is being performed alongside the work of EU collaboration COST 351. + Granular material assessment and modelling, carried out with TU Dresden, + COST 337 A European co-operative project on granular materials in which national research effort is being co-ordinated, summarised and results produced in a state-of-the art form for better application of these materials across Europe, + COST 347 A European co-operative project on accelerated ;oading of pavements in which national research effort is being co-ordinated, summarised and results produced in a state-of-the art form for better application across Europe. The work is carried out in collaboration with parallel work in the USA and the above link leads to a 'front-page' for both activities, + COURAGE A European "4th Framework" collaborative research project between 11 research centres in 9 countries on granular materials. We are performing a wide range of laboratory tests on 4 materials and are monitoring and evaluating the behaviour of several pavements. We aim to better determine the contribution that aggregates of different types, in different conditions can make to pavement performance and, thereby, to promote improved application of these materials.+ The use of coal ash in embankments and the water qulaity implications of so-doing.
