Current Research

Gethin's research involves a variety of GNSS activities, primarily linked to kinematic GPS and it's applications, most notably in Engineering Surveying. He has extensive research background in engineering surveying, kinematic GPS and GNSS, as well as engineering applications of GPS. The main areas of current research include using GPS and GNSS for deformation monitoring, in particular the deformations and deflections of structures notably large bridges. In addition, current research focuses on the use of GNSS, as well as other sensors such as INS and pseudolites and locatalites to aid the positioning of buried pipes and cables in conjunction with geophysical devices.

Past Research

Gethin's past research focused on the development of cycle slip detection techniques for kinematic GPS, as well as the use of GPS for construction plant control and guidance.

Another area is the use of GPS for monitoring the deflections of large bridges. This area of research was started in 1994, and has developed into a major area of research, including a large EPSRC grant, as well as a number of smaller grants, as well as numerous papers and successful PhD students.

Future Research

Gethin's future research will focus on using integrated GNSS, ie GPS, GLONASS and Galileo for engineering applications. This will involve the development of processing and integration software. In addition to this, future research will also focus on Terrestrial-Based RF Positioning Technologies such as pseudolites and locatalites, allowing GNSS trechnology to be utilised in built up and difficult environments for GNSS.
