Research Summary

My main research interests are in wind engineering, especially the dynamic response of structures to wind, structural health monitoring and structural dynamics.

Current projects include:

  • Computational modelling of wind loads on tall building
  • Computational modelling of windborne debris flight
  • Modelling damage and degradation in RC structures
  • Emergent modelling of crowd structure interaction on pedestrian bridges
  • Residual strength in post-tensioned bridge structures
  • Progressive collapse of flat slab structures

Future Research

I am very keen to develop further research on the response of bridges to wind and the structural health monitoring of bridges. Both of these areas could exploit recent developments in signal processing such as Principal Componenent Analysis (PCA) and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and non-linear curve fitting techniques. They also require complex computational modelling, including linking CFD to structural codes and non-linear modelling of damage in concrete structures. I have recently started looking at analysing tensegrity and cable structures and am keen to develop models of their vibration behaviour.
