Expertise Summary

John Wilson is Professor of Human Factors at the University of Nottingham. He is also employed 50% of his time as Principal Ergonomist (Knowledge and Strategy) by Network Rail, having first joined Railtrack in 2001 as Human Factors Strategic Advisor. He has held previous positions at Loughborough and Birmingham Universities, at UC Berkeley, and was Head of the School of Risk and Safety Science at UNSW, Sydney, Australia.

John is a Chartered Psychologist and a Chartered Engineer as well as a Fellow of the Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factors and its current Past President and a certified European Ergonomist (EurErg). He has been awarded the Ergonomics Society Sir Frederic Bartlett Medal in 1995, for services to international ergonomics teaching and research, the Distinguished Overseas Colleague Award of the US Human Factors and Ergonomics Society in 2008, and - with the Ergonomics Team of Network Rail - was a joint recipient of the Ergonomics Society President's Medal in 2007.

He has been manager, principal investigator or grant holder on over 75 major grants from Research Councils, government, the European Union and public bodies, and carried out research or consultancy for over 100 companies. For European work he has acted as coordinator, technical manager, or integration manager for a number of projects and works as a evaluator, reviewer and rapporteur for the Commission. He has authored over 500 publications with more than 300 in refereed books, journals or conferences and is a Scientific or Associate Editor and on the Editorial Boards of five journals in human factors/ergonomics, and virtual environments, and has been Editor-in-Chief of Applied Ergonomics since 1991.

Research Summary

John has interests across all fundamental and applied areas of human factors/ergonomics. These include:

  • Systems analysis and design; requirements analysis
  • Human factors and risk management
  • Interactive systems (including VR/VE and mobile computing)
  • Collaborative working; team working
  • Participative design
  • Cognitive ergonomics, mental workload, mental models
  • Planning and scheduling, decision making
  • Development of analytical and evaluation methods
  • Application fields in manufacturing, health systems and transport, including, rail and air traffic control human factors

His research contributions to rail human factors include the development of performance assessment approaches for workload and situation awareness, human factors of track access and protection arrangements, and the understanding of human factors risk generally. He was lead organiser of the only three international conferences on rail human factors and is co-editor of the only two books on rail human factors.
