My academic career has focused on undergraduate, postgraduate and professional education. My philosophy has always been to maintain a strong link between my teaching and technical/scientific research - 'research focused teaching'. This enables teaching from my own cutting edge research experience and stimulates interest and enthusiasm for the subject. This has led me to undertake PhD level research into education jointly supervising with the School of Education. It has also led to the award of significant level of funding from outside the University. Over my career I have also undertaken a wide range of academic roles including Vice Dean for the Faculty of Engineering, Deputy Head of Department of Civil Engineering and Member of Senate for the Faculty of Engineering.

Current Research

Key areas of research are in the fields of; surveying, mapping, positioning and orientation determination, and terrestrial, mobile and airborne remote sensing. The problems of the integration of sensors, in particular GNSS, inertial measurement units and remote sensing sensors (muliti-spectural scanners, aerial cameras, laser scanners) including the calibration of sensors and systems is of interest. This is typically applied to direct georeferencing of mobile and airborne remote sensing imagery and LiDAR to capture geospatial information for a range of applications, for example landscape studies and civil engineering. Investigations into the quality of automatically generated digital surface models (DSM's) using digital photogrammetric techniques and laser scanning particularly for modelling 3D landscapes and urban environments for visualization and engineering continues to be very active. There is an increasing interest in geospatial information of various kinds leading to research in to the comparison, fusion and integration of information to fully exploit the measurement and data gathering technologies. Finally, there is continued research activity is in the development of technologies for high precision industrial and engineering measurement and monitoring.
