Biography

Mike Somekh graduated from Oxford University in Materials Science and completed a PhD in Microwave Electronics from Lancaster University in 1981.

He subsequently returned to Oxford to work on Contrast Mechanism in Scanning Acoustic Microscopy, firstly as a research associate, then as an EPSRC Research Fellow. He was appointed lecturer and head of the Wolfson Unit for Micro-NDE at University College London, a post he held for three years prior to coming to Nottingham.

He joined the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University of Nottingham in 1989 when he established the Applied Optics Research Group. He was promoted to Reader in 1992 and Professor of Optical Engineering in 1995, the post he now holds.

In 2007 he became co-director of IBIOS (the Institute of Biophysics, Imaging and Optical Science) with Prof. Paul O'Shea.
