Medical Research Commercialised with a University Spin-Out Company
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering recently established Monica Healthcare Ltd, a spin-out company developing foetal monitoring technology for use in high-risk pregnancies.
We are delighted to report that Monica has won prestigious awards at the recent UK Joint Research Council Business Plan Competition.
The patented technology has the potential to revolutionise the way in which high-risk pregnancies are managed. There are around 65,000 high-risk births each year in the UK. These result in 16,000 unnecessary caesareans and 2,000 still-births, figures which the technology aims to significantly reduce. The technology is based the highly accurate and noise-free capture of the abdominal foetal electrocardiogram, a tiny electrical signal generated by the fetal heartbeat and detected from the mother's abdomen.
